Heavy Rains Raise Landslide Risk in Northern Pakistan

Residents and visitors in Murree, Galiyat, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir have been put on alert as days of relentless monsoon rains increase the likelihood of landslides in the region.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned on Sunday that downpours are expected to continue through September 9, with the possibility of heavy spells causing slope failures and road blockages in popular hill stations.

Travel and Safety Concerns

The PMD urged tourists to reconsider non-essential trips to the affected areas, noting that road closures could leave travellers stranded. Local authorities also advised residents of at-risk zones to remain vigilant and take precautionary steps.

Other Hazards Beyond Landslides

The advisory didn’t stop at landslides. The Met Office highlighted the risk of urban flooding and flash floods in low-lying areas, while strong winds and lightning could endanger weaker structures such as mud houses, billboards, and electric installations.

Emergency Response on Standby

Officials confirmed that disaster management units are on alert and coordinating with local administrations. Communities in vulnerable locations have been advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for possible disruptions.

With the monsoon showing no signs of slowing, authorities are balancing tourist activity with safety concerns, particularly in destinations that usually draw crowds at this time of year.
