Shikhpuran,– Authorities have raised a high-level flood warning for the Sutlej River as water levels continue to surge, prompting emergency measures to protect residents and livestock.
Rescue 1122 officials confirmed on Tuesday that river flow had spiked dramatically, reaching 950,000 cusecs, and could rise further to 1,250,000 cusecs in the coming hours. The situation has led to urgent evacuation efforts across flood-prone areas.
“Teams are on high alert and working around the clock to move people and animals to safety,” a Rescue 1122 spokesperson told APP. So far, 2,281 residents and 1,068 cattle have been relocated to secure locations under emergency protocols.
To support those displaced, the district administration has established a flood relief camp at Check Post, Talwar, in Shikhpuran. Officials say relief operations are being coordinated closely to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to affected families.
Experts warn that with the river continuing to swell, residents living near its banks should remain vigilant and follow evacuation directives promptly. Floods of this magnitude, if unchecked, could cause significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture in the region.
The ongoing response highlights the importance of preparedness as authorities monitor water levels and coordinate rescue operations to minimize potential harm.
